Phew.... we survived Year One in our Bridgeport Village Location. It was a fabulous ride and we're looking forward to doing it all over again. Last weekend was a dousey (is that how you spell ?dousey?). In an effort to meet an ad deadline we fitted and shot our fall landing page shoot in record time. Under record conditions. We had 48 hours to coordinate schedules between our model, photographer and myself and regardless of weather conditions we had to get it done.
It rained... alot.... but fashion prevailed and we got some fabulous shots and made our ad deadline (check us out in Portland Monthly's November issue).

Remembered..... Minus Points

Many of you know already- but I got hitched 2 weeks ago. As you can imagine a flood of memories came to the surface during that weekend. The time had come for me to hand in my highest heels and smallest clutch for a comfortable pair of ballet flats and accommodating size handbag.

One of my sweet lobster friends reminded me of how much fun, young and maybe even a little dumb we once were when she toasted at our wedding. I Loved it. Loved the memories, the laughs and the dreads.

Later that week I found myself coming back to her original list of Minus Points (from 3 years ago)!!!! All of these bullet points (either minus or plus points) actually, honestly, embarrassingly happened to us. Thanks Brookie for being So Fabulous and remembering the best of times!!!

Over the last few years, with my best (Lobster) friends Staci and Cleary - we have continually been developing a list, a tool if you will. We discuss and add to it as we see fit. Sadly enough, most of the "minus point" items on this list are from actual experiences. Live and learn though, right? At first glance one might think this is for the ladies, but really - dudes pay attention here, this one is for you. Read, absorb and be sure to minimize the minus points as much as possible.
Ladies - take the list, customize, add to it and I guarantee the formula for the "Perfect Man" will work - or at least help you avoid the uber creepies out there. Each guy starts with 100 points.
The Perfect Man (or at least as close as one can get):

-Wears a baseball hat backwards - minus 10 points
-Wears a baseball hat backwards while at the gym - minus 15 points
-Does not call when he says he will - minus 15 points (each time)
-Asks for a discount from your work before the first date has happened - minus 20 points-Has ex-girlfriend living with him - minus 20 points
-Wears a sweater vest - minus 10 points
-Wears a sweater vest, but somehow pulls it off - plus 10 points

-Is actually prettier than you (good for him, but) - minus 15 points
-Suggests fun dates like tango dancing, kayaking, space needle, picnic at the beach (you get the idea) - plus 15 points

-When hitting the tanning bed, or applying self tanner, know when to say when - plus 10 points
-Has more than just a bar of Lever 2000 in his shower - plus 10 points
-Announces when he is "peeing" in the same water that you are standing in and thinks it's totally

Highlights from Last Friday's Wine Event!!!

Last Friday, Mapel had the honor of hosting Gail Tussing as our featured artist. The elegance of her work is to be commended. From abstract to scenic, her art stirs up an emotion with every glance and naturally leads to deep contemplation. It was fascinating getting to know the inspiration or story behind each of her pieces, or create my own story to go with each unique abstract.

To compliment the evening, Mapel had the privilege of donating fifteen percent of sales to non-profit, Divine Threads. They will be housed in an old farm house, minutes from Mapel, and right now they are in the process of demolishing and remodeling. I can only imagine that it will be cozy and welcoming for the women who are making the choice to transition their current lifestyles into professional career paths. As a start-up non-profit there is a huge need of time, gently used clothes, and financial support, and they are so thankful for any and all contributions. If you ever need to revamp your closet and want to donate your clothing, Divine Threads is gladly accepting contributions. Thanks to everyone that came out to our First (but not Last) Wine Event last Friday. On July 1st we kicked off our first in a series of bi-weekly Wine Friday's. During the summer months Mapel Boutique will showcase a new local artists while offering complimentary wine tasting from a local winery every other Friday. If you haven't met Jenny Schildan, a Sherwood artist, it's not too late! Art has always been a passion and hobby of hers. One way her passion for art is demonstrated is by volunteering at her children's school as the Artist in Residence. As an Artist in Residence she worked with every classroom in the school to help each student paint a tile to contribute to a collaborative work of art. This was a rich and engaging opportunity for the students which will also turn into a rich and priceless work of art. Fortunately, this passion for art is going to turn into a business opportunity in the near future. This summer, she and a close friend will be opening Vine Gogh Artist Bar to the public in the Sellwood neighborhood. So, for all of the "less artistic" people in the world, we can have a glass of wine to loosen up the artist inside, and paint our way through a two-hour class, walking out the door with a fresh painting to fill that empty wall space. In short, because of Vine Gogh Artist Bar, there is still hope for us:o).

It's been over 6 months in our new Bridgeport location.... and we're loving every minute of it. No really- I'm not just saying that. We have a Fabulous team of Brilliant sales associates (most of them long time friends) that remind me every day how much they love their jobs. I love my sweet sales associates because they pride themselves on connecting with, talking to and creating relationships with our customers. This I believe is the foundation of a strong boutique. Thanks to my sweet friends Holly, Bethany, Maizy and our newest ladies Jennica and Kari.

In an effort to get ready for the busy summer season we are spiffing up the store. We've added new fixtures in the dressing rooms. Installed new overhead lighting in the store space, added surround sound speakers and re-modeled our back stock room. Special thanks to Chris Perry (our local jewelry designer Elizabeth Perry's husband) and Brandon.

Mapel's In Heart With.....

We have fallen head over heels for our Lanston and Krissa collection. The same fierce woman designer heads both brands. She created two collections so each could have a strong aesthetic that reads different from the other. Krisa is her sweetly feminine and sophisticated collection while Lanston is a bit more urban chic.

This month the hot ticket item has been Krisa's Linen pants. Available in Moss, White & we just got in Black (not yet on the site).They have a full Italian inspired Palazzo pant look. The slightly lower waistline makes your rear look Great (which isn't easy to do in linen pants) and the fullll leg opening is a fresh take on a predictable summer fabrication.

The favorite pairing with Krisa's linen pant is Lanston's Drape Back Tank. Available in White & Black. This top has the right amount of weight to be a little drapey without being too thin that it's see through. The open back detail is a little bit sexy but not overtly revealing. Most customer wear with a bra that can be visible from the back or a detailed bandeau top.

Being a child of the 70's I remember my mother dressing in colorful maxi dresses, color block dresses and skirts ( I called them "hippie"), halter tops, and patch blouses (she made me a flower patch blanket taking fabric scraps and creating each petal from different fabric). Her accessories were floral headpieces, bangles, and big bags. It's been almost four months since Mapel Boutique in Bridgeport has been open. It's only as of the last few weeks I've been able to exhale a huge "Phewwwww". I think we've got our rhythm down (at least for the time being) and I can somehow partition off time for personal stuff. In case you didn't already know- I'm simultaneously planning a wedding (the ball drops on July 23rd) while opening the Bridgeport store.

It's with the extensive help of friends and family that the pieces have come together and I've got my rhythm down balancing work and wedding. With that in mind I want to thank all of the sweet'ness lovelies that have supported Mapel and Me. Me and Mapel.

First off (because I'm obsessed) I have to thank sweet baby Enzo. For those of you that have stopped into the store and inquired about "my son" - let the record show that he's actually my sisters son- but I love him like he's my own. On a fairly regular basis Enzo and Christi stop into the store for a visit. It makes my Day!!!!

If you spell Mapel Boutique backwards you get Brandon. No really. He is such a huge part of Mapel's growth and foundation. Thanks Brandon for being exponentially supportive and brilliant.

I've now started to add my mom to Mapel's scheduling calendar. Like clock work she stops in Every Other Day. With her she brings food - lots of it, enough for that day and the following day. She makes me sit down and eat with her before she leaves. That's a mom for you. She's also been known to entertain children (with her mad Disney drawing skills) while the moms shop.

Wedding season is right around the corner…(no, really)

Hi, we are Hannah Brownlee and Marisa Coleman, and are excited to finally be announcing the launch of Double-Checked Weddings. Though we have both been involved in this industry for a number of years, this marks the beginning of an official partnership! If attending the same high school, attending the same college, being housemates, working for the same nonprofit organization after graduation, and starting our families at the same time wasn't enough, we are now business partners. Thankfully, we like each other. We get along. We work well together. What makes us such a good team? We each bring a slightly different work style and a lot of experience to the table. We strongly believe in the “two heads are better than one” philosophy and we work together to sort out all of the last-minute details of each wedding we take on. And we believe our clients benefit from this symbiotic relationship in a big way.

We are based out of the Portland area and specialize in day-of wedding coordination, providing expert facilitation of a couple's rehearsal and wedding day. We are day-of wedding coordinators, not full-on wedding planners. Don't get us wrong, though: we do love each and every detail that goes into wedding planning, but since our families come first, we assign them the priority of our time. Rather, we leave the bulk of the initial arrangements to each couple (offering assistance and vendor recommendations when needed) and then come alongside during the final few months to make sure that we learn the full scope of their vision. On the day of the wedding, we are there to execute that vision, freeing our clients to focus on and enjoy the big picture. Limiting the number of weddings we do take on enables us to best focus our full attention on each bride!

Lovers Do It in February

It's been encouraging to see how many Oregon customers love that Mapel is locally owned & operated. We've received an equally positive response to our product assortment of local designers. The same was true for Leavenworth (locally owned and local designers)- but I think in such a small town like Leavenworth most business are locally owned- that includes Dan's Grocery (Dan actually works at the store on a regular basis).

So I didn't think much of the "local" origin of Mapel when I opened the Bridgeport location. It was actually our graphic designer's idea to add a small clause on our sandwich board "locally owned". Out of all the "interesting" facts on our sandwich board (FREE Gift wrapping, Daily Happy Hour specials) it was the "locally owned" clause that got the most feedback. I had customers walk into the store telling me that their co-worker, sister, friend, etc. etc. told them to come in because we were locally based.

You know how my brain gets to thinkin and turnin (and maybe a glass of wine or two helps enable the "turnin'"); Brandon and I came up with an idea. Since Mapel is a local business (and we exist within a very corporate shopping environment) we wanted to find a way to connect with other local entities.

Eventually we reached our "ah.... Huh" moment and we came up with "Lovers Do It in February" and by "do it" we mean support their local community. During the entire month of February Mapel will donate one of our best selling designer scarves to local womens shelters for every purchase made. Any and Every Purchase (online, in store, on sale, etc. etc.) will equate to a scarf donation to either Raphael House or Salvation Army West Womens Shelter.

As a local business we believe it's important to support local causes and this month we are excited to collaborate with Raphael House & Salvation Army for our "Lovers Do It in February.... by "do it" we mean support their local community".

Thanks to everyone that came out for Katie's Trunk show this week. What a GREAT event. Her pieces were (no joke) jaw dropping. Brilliant. The hours leading up to the event we had customers asking about her work before we even had them tagged or merchandised. Kudos to Katie for her diligence, hard work and creative eye.

Renaissance Woman

My sweet, talented, strong and accomplished friend Katie Myers is a true Renaissance Woman.
By definition a Renaissance Woman is:
A woman who has broad intellectual interests and is accomplished in areas of both the arts and the sciences.

That is THE descriptive of my friend Katie. When her kids were babies she made a business out of crafting baby slings, nursing covers, pacifiers straps - you name it. Essentially she made her own baby goodies and all her mommie friends came calling for their own. A business is created - 'Voila.

As her kids grew she started making little girl dress, tutu's and newsboy caps. Voila' - A business is created.

Now her kids have grown out of the "little girl dress' and tutu" phase. So today Katie keeps her hands busy by crafting furniture. She takes older pieces and refurbishes them. New paint, new fabric covers, new etching, new whatever is needed to bring life back to an old and loved furniture piece. She slowly started creating these pieces and finding places for them in her home. It didn't take long for friends and family to request commissioned pieces. Voila- a business is created.

Katie has most recently created a variety of sweet, lovely, jaw dropping pieces for Mapel. My store is presently accented with a number of her signature pieces. You'll find her victorian shaped and geometric patterned ottomans in our dressing rooms.

She also has bow legged garden party chairs tucked into our corners or greeting you at the door. Her charming multi drawer dresser with asymmetrical glass handles and 2 matching porcelain etched handles holds our plethora of scarves and soy based candles.

Yesterday Katie popped into the store with yet another piece. Unbeknownst to me she had taken an older and larger table and shorted it to create a petite and boutique aesthetic. She painted it and then created hand drawn borders along the top.

So... if all of this isn't enough to make you feel totally inspired and want to tap into your inner Martha Stewart- Katie has accepted my offer to host Mapel's first ever trunk show. Traditionally a trunk show is when a designer brings their "trunk" of new goodies and opens it up to share with a select group of people. Since Katie's work certainly won't fit into a trunk- she is bringing car loads of her work. I'm looking forward to showcasing bedroom sets, restructured cork frames, dressers, toy chests and Much More.

Because Katie has such an inviting and encouraging spirit she has opened the trunk show invite to anyone and everyone. She wants to host an evening with new and old friends that celebrates her workmanship. Stop into Mapel on Tuesday the 25th and take a stroll through her lovingly merchandised vignettes. Mapel will have wine (of course) and chocolate.

It was Nuts- absolutely Nuts getting the Bridgeport store open in time for the Holidays. Once the store was open we were emerged into the holiday shopping season. Which is the best way to learn the ropes- jump in feet first and start swimming!!! After all that "emerging" and "swimming" I was ready for a 'vaca!!!

Shortly after Christmas I headed down south to Mexico to join my family for New Years. It was 4 whole days of eating, drinking, laying, talking, relaxing (anything that doesn't "require" a shower and makeup). Both Brandon and I had a Great Time ringing in the New Year with fireworks and family.

Upon arrival I had to snatch up sweet Enzo and source myself a cerveza.

Once again, it is a winter wonderland in Leavenworth! The #1 Christmas town in America is def' living up to all the hype this year with plenty of snow, lights, and festivities! This is Mapel's 4th Christmas in Leavenworth and this year there are more visitors than ever before, which we of course LOVE.

I wish I had pictures of the actual Christmas festivities to show off, but I'm always in the shop during the tree lighting weekends! So all I have are these pictures from my house and Sleeping Lady Reosrt. (our favorite breakfast spot). As you can see, Cora is quite interested in the snow and all it has to offer her. She's already learned how to throw snowballs and enjoys eating "snow cones".

Wish I had time to write more, but I'm busy gearing up for another crazy busy tree lighting weekend. This is just my little "teaser" blog to say - come visit Mapel in Leavenworth this holiday season - it's magical!

Full House, Full Glasses & Full Shopping Bags!!!

Last night was a full house at our Grand Opening Par'Tay for the Bridgeport location. Full house, full glasses and full shopping bags (all very good things). The hours leading up to the event were a bit.... stressful. I had to once again tap into my favor bank to get it all done in time- but somehow we got there.

I put Everyone to work. If you arrived early or on time you had a job to do- and do it Fast. It was either folding gift boxes, tie bows around the hangers, washing the fruit, folding garments or sweeping the floors.
However the party went off without a hitch and I "think" everyone had a great time.

Favor Bank Overdraft

In approx a week's time we somehow managed to get Mapel Boutique "up and running". We may not have all of our artwork up on the walls and some of our vendors didn't follow through with their commitment to "deliver" product in time.... but none the less we opened our doors on Crazy A__ Black Friday. It was a soft, smooth and exciting opening.

We were still adhering stickers onto our shopping bags as our first customer Lois Klune rang our register with her purchases. That first weekend was an exciting mix of new customers and old friends showing their support.

It was within that week's time we "set up shop" that I rapidly depleted my favor bank... and am now in serious overdraft status. Brandon and I owe about a thousand favors to our friends and family. While Brandon and I have strengths in some areas- there are Many Others we simply don't have an aptitude for.

I Never could of spiffed up my store fixtures without the help of Big Headed Eric.

I Never could of painted Every Little Crevice of this space without the help of my sweet mother in law to be.

I Never could of created such strong branding without the help of Andy's exterior facing decals.

I Never could of had the spirit and endurance to tag one Zillion new garments, scarves, earrings, cards, gloves, hats, purses (the list goes on and on) AND decorate my pathetic Christmas Trees without the help of Ashlie.

I Never could of created a professional surround sound atmosphere, assembled the dressing room mirrors and doors or anything else that involved a drill without Eric.

I Never could of had the endurance or patience to paint the monstrosity of a table without Katie.

And just so you don't think I was sitting back and sipping wine with my finger pointed....

So in close... Thanks to Everyone that lent a much needed hand. I will slowly diligently to lower my overdraft favor bank. Thanks Thanks Thanks.

MANDI! Mapel Employee by Day, Designer by Night!!

I never thought I'd own a jewelry design business. I'd always been a singer and actor, so design had never figured into my life. I liked fashion: Vogue Magazine, red carpets at awards shows, dressing how I felt like dressing. After I got married about 10 years ago, I happened upon a job at a bead store and picked up some skills. I liked color. I liked composition. And I made some gifts for friends and family.

One family friend really liked my stuff. She was funky, fun, and statuesque, and I did some custom pieces for her. She insisted I get my license and get my stuff in stores because other people liked it, too. So another family friend helped me start my business. At this point, I was going through a divorce and it was very empowering to have people like what I was doing and want me to succeed.

I came up with my business name one day working at a natural fibers clothing store, and luckily, nobody else in the state had it. "Earth, Wind & Wire" was perfect for my designs: "Earth" for the earthy, African influenced stuff, "Wind" for the more delicate and ethereal pieces, and "Wire" for all the wire I loop and wrap; hours of sitting on the couch beading, looping, cutting and shooting wire everywhere! Gives me something to do while I watch my crime shows:)

I keep my designs simple and go with my gut. It's exciting to say, "I need earrings for that outfit," and be able to make them. This semi-instant-gratification is addictive! I love to see the potential in a bead that looks boring or tacky, then incorporate it into a piece that gets compliments. I think all women are beautiful, and if putting on a special necklace makes them feel more gorgeous, more power to us!

We all need a little retail therapy, and bead shopping usually fills my need to impulse buy. It takes money to make money, right? And working at Mapel definitely inspires me to buy...

I have had my business since 2004 and have been profitable every year - either through doing jewelry shows at people's houses, outdoor festivals, or selling wholesale in stores. But it's time to grow! I am working with a local web designer to get a porfolio going online, and soon will have an Etsy storefront. Jewelry has always been a means to an end to me: something I enjoy that fuels my other passions. So, a lot of my sales will go toward a very cathartic album I've been working on for 10 years.

Three Year Ago we opened Mapel Boutique in Leavenworth. It's been a long uphill course for Jenelle and I- and we've loved every minute of it. In hindsight we laugh about the moment when industry professionals refer to us directly as "those little girls with a dress shop", or when outside associates (in this case our landlord) bullies us unsuccessfully to re-defining our lease to suite his ever changing needs.

Oktoberfest '10 Highlights

We began the weekend by making sure we had everything on our Oktoberfest checklist....Lederhosen - check! Dirndl - check! Crazy bavarian hats - check! Big stein of beer - check! The 2nd weekend of O'fest was just as fun as the first - especially because my two best'ies -Jackie and Jaime - came to L to help out at Mapel and enjoy the festivities!

My famous aunt Heidi Kuhn (aka Heidi Klum) also had her best-ies with her this weekend - those girls looked adorable in their "rock out with your brat out" Mapel tees and cute fall hats (also from Mapel...)

We tent-hopped throughout the evening to enjoy all the different genres of music and activities Oktoberfest had to offer.

Dinner at South was a MUST following a fun yet exhausting day at the shop!

And it wouldn't be Oktoberfest in my house without Elmo doing the chicken dance with Cora several hundred times per day.

Alright, I admit it. I am using this week's blog to show off the latest pics of my daughter. BUT it is related to this month's blog theme "Oktoberfest". He quickly informed me that writing a blog reminded him too much of being in school and having papers to write - a dreaded task that he hopes to leave in the past. Fine. I'll write about lederhosen myself.

If you follow Mapel's blog (and who doesn't?!), then you already know that my hubby, Torrey, is OBSESSED with these fine leather pants/shorts suspender-combos called "lederhosen". He has accumulated quite the selection of various sizes, colors, and styles. This time of year, he sells them online and in Mapel, and you might be surprised by how many men are willing to pay $120 - $140 for a pair of 'hosen.

In addition to selling pieces from his "collection", Torrey also loans out the leder to friends/family that visit us in Leavenworth. Most of them eagerly agree to pose as bavarians for a day or so. He also insists on dressing our 1 year-old daughter, Cora in lady'hosen during O'fest. It sort of makes her look like a little boy from the early 19th century, but I love it! Cora is proving that she can pull off individual style at a young age.

We have been counting down the days for the last 22 days- literally. As soon as October begins to peek it's head out from under the pile of fall leaves we begin strategizing how to make the Most out of our Favorite month of the year.

We Love October because it brings Oktoberfest to our sweet little Bavarian town of Leavenworth.

Guaranteed fun all month long with a town full of brat hungry people eagerly quenching their thirst via steins of beer. Jenelle and I excitedly re-merchandise our whole store this month. We carry double the amount of product we would normally carry- which means alot of work tetris'ing all this product into our tiny store and even more tiny stock room. Since we are busily shooting new product for the website and steaming outerwear we won't be able to elaborate further on how much we love O'fest. We can however show pics of the mad'ness!!!!

Through a series of ill customer service events this week I couldn't help but beam over how accommodating Mapel is. Yes- I'm bragging but I believe I have reason to boast.

This last weekend I "hosted" (and I use that word loosely) a Garage Sale. My parents are moving and I offered to help them via a G Sale- and it allowed me to rid myself of Boxes and Boxes of clothes, shoes and purses that I somehow accumulated while working at Nordstrom.
Upon completion of the G Sale I couldn't wait to deposit my spoils. I went into my US Bank just below my house to do my banking. When I got to the counter I started stacking my bills and my coins.

For the record my bills were counted and I had approximately 5 rolls of coins (3 quarter rolls of $10 each and 2 nickel rolls of $5 each). In addition to the rolls of change I has about... a small handful of loose change.
In the midst of me stacking my spoils on the counter the clerk started to mumble something to the guy behind her. I would assume that since the guy behind her was wearing a a long sleeve embroidered US Bank shirt he was her (short sleeve embroidered polo) superior. I heard them mumble mumble mumble. Then timidely the long sleeve told me they could not accept my change.

Me: What?

Long Sleeve: We don't have a change counter here so we can't take your change?

Me: What did you say? You can't take my change?

Long Sleeve: Well.... we could take some of it- but only the loose change and only as much as we can fit in her drawer.

Me: Just so I understand what you are saying.... You CAN NOT deposit my change?

Long Sleeve: Yea.... we don't have a change counter here- so we would have to actually un-roll your coins and count them.

Me: Sorry to repeat myself- but I want to make sure I understand what you are saying. You Won't Accept my Change? You will not deposit my coins?

Long Sleeve: Yea.... we could take your bills..... but the change you would have to take to another bank, or you could take to a coin star.

Me: Although I think this is odd... I won't be "one of those" and cause a scene. But before leaving I do want to be Very Clear that the concern I have with this issue is larger then me voicing myself at this branch. I believe it's important to share my concern with this form of banking (or lack of) with the larger entity of US Bank.

With that Me and my spoils exited stage right. Directly into my 'yetta where I promptly called my speed dial US Bank phone number. After about 10 minutes on the phone with Joe I felt somewhat assured that my legitimate complaint would be used for the better'ment of their banking process. - Yea right -

Cliff Notes:
This week a woman walked into a US Bank to deposit her money and was told they can't accept what is a nationally recognized form of currency. A form of currency that is used, requested, accepted and traded all over the United States. Is that legal?

Secondly (but not as dramatic) I was out to happy hour with some friends this week and our waiter forgot All Together that he has already taken our order. Upon arrival he greeted us, took our drink order, answered our food questions and then took our food order. When he brought our drinks he asked us if we wanted something to eat. We looked questionably at him and each other.... and told him we already ordered. He nodded his head and walked away. Two minutes later I flagged him down and said..... Do you remember that we already ordered our food with YOU. Nope- no recollection. That's a minor customer service concern- and mistakes happen.

What bothers me is that an institution that is required to function as a "bank" was/is allowed to fall short on the very basics of their descriptions because of lazy'ness. They could and should count coins. The fact that some branches have a mechanic counter and others don't is of no importance to me. They either do or don't have a tool that makes their job easier. However- their job remains the same. If I was to ask for $45 in coins. ($30 in quarters $10 in dimes and $4 in nickels and $1 in pennies) they would have to count and exchange said coins.

So to bring this all back to Mapel I would like to share what customer service expectations will Always be met by Mapel.

In a couple of days I will pack up my things and make the trek back to school in Bellingham. As I do every year, I have been pondering my absolute “Must Haves” for some time. Of course, the list could go on and on, but as a college student I have to narrow it down to the essentials.

1. The Ultimate Pair of Hudson Jeans

Hudson’s button-flap pockets are a stylish twist on traditional denim…plus they make my derriere look so good (not to toot my own horn…but they do)! My favorite is the full length Elm Wash from Mapel (on the right). The petite style on the left are great with flats, as well.

2. Sweaters, Sweaters, Sweaters...I can't get enough!

I'm loving the yarn dyed cardigan and sweater in Eggplant at Mapel.

3. Nautical-Inspired Tops

A few weeks ago I was enjoying a lovely pedicure at my favorite Leavenworth hair salon, Shears with their newest addition, Krissy. We were discussing the fun and challenging aspects of owning a business in this cute Bavarian-themed village, and I raved to her about how amazing the local community has been to Mapel. We talked about different ways to get to know the local customers and keep them excited about our businesses, and then she offered the most BRILLIANT idea for fall - a hair/fashion show! The idea quickly blossomed into an evening of wine, food, chocolate desserts (you KNOW Mapel doesn't have events w/out choc!), music, giveaways, & more - AKA "Definitive Fall Event".

Talk About " " Talent....

I was blown away this week by how entirely brilliant Mapel's new landing page pics are. Actually- the word Brilliant doesn't do them justice. It's like those MasterCard commercials when they list the amount as "Priceless". In this case the evoked emotion is "indescribable".

About 2 months ago my good friend and Mapel veteran photographer Cleary of Cleary O'Farrell Photography emailed me with some inspiration pics she ran across. She had been playing around on the web and ran across some great mood evoking pics of a product model alongside a corresponding yet not predictably complimentary image. She thought it might be an interesting idea for Mapel. A few weeks later we managed to muster up a Fabulous model (actually a customer of Mapel's and friend of Cleary's from Seattle), a vacant vintage Seattle apartment on Queen Anne and a date that worked for all three of us.

I packed up the 'yetta with all of the fall preview treats we had in store and embarked on a trek from Leavenworth to Seattle- a voyage I was now very proficient at. It was immediate collaborative chemistry amongst the three of us. The shoot itself was inspiring, smooth and somewhat easy. I knew if Cleary was doing the photos I would be in good hands.

What I didn't know was that Cleary's eye (in this case lens) caught moments, views, moods, colors and textures I didn't even begin to notice. When I received the final pics this week I was speechless. So speechless I had to call her directly to tell her how " " I was. (Remember- words don't describe the caliber and context of how " " these pics are.)

So.... enough " "- let's get to the goods. Below are a few of my favorites. Thanks Miss Cleary for your ever evolving talent and your dear friendship.

Leavenworth Summer Livin'...

10 Days Down & "only" 9 left until my long L'worth stint is over. August is one of Mapel's busiest & fun'nest months (2nd to October of course). So it goes without saying that I would spend a majority of my time on site @ Mapel during such an important month. All of my favorites make it a point to visit during my long stint- which helps to break up the time AND ensure optimal summer weather enjoyment.

Last weekend my Seattle Lobsters Brooke and Cleary came over to do some shopping, eating and karaoke'ing. They got here late friday afternoon and we immediately broke out the chocolates and wine. As an added bonus my friend Liza from Portland stopped into the store with her sweet little girls on their way to Chelan. It's always so special when someone makes such a deliberate point to drive out of their way to say Hello. Thanks sweet Ladies.

I pass the time in the evenings by playing "Wine Teasers" with Jenelle and Torrey. We created our own "advanced" version of the game and when someone gets 3 wrong answers in a row they have to dress up in one of Torrey's Halloween costumes and run alongside a passing car (or in Torrey's case showcase his full moon). If we are not playing "Wine Teasers" we are scooting around in Torrey's new "electric bike?".

Today the double duo tag team Jason and Jaime are coming into town. Hopefully we can get in a nice tube down the river and possible dinner @ South. Knowing those two there will likely also be a terribly challenging puzzle we must conquer while they are here.

Fast forwarding to Next weekend my lovely friend Stefanie will be stopping into Leavenworth on her way to Montana. What to expect? Sangria & "new friends". Can't wait.

Mapel Emphatically Announces Orange Box Jewelry

Earlier this summer I had an adorable, petite yoga instructor of a customer in the store. She was up from Seattle showing her parents (from Nebraska) around the northwest area. I won't divulge too much info about this customer- but she fell in heart with our assortment of "petite" jeans and I in-turn found a Fabulous new jewelry designer. She was wearing the cutest most unique earrings I've ever seen.

She bought them at the Fremont Market from a woman that has a collection called Orange Box Jewelry. It took me all of .05 seconds to google OBJ, email her and set up a time to talk over the phone about working together. A few days later we had our first shipment of Orange Box Jewelry. Upon receipt my mouth dropped. Her collection is AmAzInG. Amazing.

Each piece is compiled of vintage, 2nd hand bits and pieces that she pairs with new necklace chains, earring backs and ring circumferences. Essentially the "bling" is second hand and the hardware is first hand. Each pieces tells a story and lends it's own personality to your look.

We are in the thick of summer- and by this time you have likely savored a few mojitos, worn out your favorite sandals, hosted a few bbq's and attended a wedding.

Next task on your list of "summer must do's" is to take a Road Trip. Set your navigator on a mini get away that involves food, drink, sun, relaxing and fabulous company. The pre planning involves deciding on your desired destination, packing your bags, and calling in sick to work. I will let you take care of deciding the destination and working up an authentic hoarse voice for your call to work. However when it comes to the packing..... I would love to lend some useful and fashionable advise.

Going to the Chapel....

I'm not getting married again (already found my Torrey lobster!). But lots of other people are this summer...so finding that "perfect" dress for summer weddings is top priorty. But before I get to my "sales pitch" (might as well call a spade a spade), I have to share a little bit about the most AMAZING wedding....

Last weekend we went to a very adorable chapel in Seattle's Mt Baker neighborhood to see our dear friends, Allison and Michael, get hitched. In case you don't recall the story, Allison is the reason Mapel exists today - the link between Staci and Jenelle.

But enough about us (for now) - it seems EVERYBODY has a wedding to go to this summer. At least that's what we hear from our customers on a daily basis. If you are as last minute as my girlfriends and me (we were trying on dress options the night before Alli's wedding), then you may need some last minute options. Okay, back to us. Jaime, Staci, and I (of course) wore Mapel dresses to the wedding. Jaime looked amazingly hot (in the words of her husband) in the black kimono dress - the top minimized her "well-endowed" chest and showed off her sexy legs (again, I'm taking actual quotes from her husband). The color, print, and style were classy for this evening summer wedding.

Staci chose the flora dropwaist maxi - perfect style for a summer evening wedding. The blouson-style top added shape and the bold print suited her contagious personality.

And I couldn't resist the black splash dress - loved that it was bra-friendly, a flattering length on my "vertically-challenged" body, and I absolutely love the black and white print.

Allison's wedding was intimate, fun, and absolutely perfect! Staci gave a memorable toast followed by lots of dancing and merriment.

Mapel Introduces.......

Mapel wants to introduce our newest local designer - Crystalyn Kae. She is a sweet Seattle based handbag designer that creates functional, unique and durable products. How did I hear about Crystalyn Kae? Through my good friend Brooke - of course.

Brookie makes it a point to not only wear Mapel- but to directly contribute to our product assortment via her strong and determined voice. Shortly after she found out (and was gifted) a Crystalyn Kae treatie she "conveniently" placed a large stack of her business cards on my coffee table. The rest if history.

How did Brookie hear about Crystalyn Kae? I'll let her tell you herself:
It was at a charity auction last December when I was first introduced to Crystalyn Kae. My husband and I were putting on the charity auction and had intimate knowledge of all the items being donated and auctioned. While there were plenty of great items, there were also several very “interesting” items….that were a challenge to merchandise in an enticing way, as to attract fellow auction goers.

That said - it was a wonderful surprise when my husband came in with a box overflowing with lovely little bundles and straps of camel, green and ivory colored leather. I of course immediately recognized them as handbags and they immediately got the front row seat at auction table #1 (right next to the wine gift basket and Mapel gift package).

I of course tried them all “on” and fell for the camel one with the ivory fabric insert…however, putting on the auction, gave me no opportunity to actually bid on any of the items. Sad. Throughout the auction, as I poured wine for people (more wine, more buying, right?), I watched as people hovered over auction table #1. They picked up the clutches, unzipped them, put their cellphone and lip sticks in for sizing and of course wrote down bids every time. By the end of the auction, I had released the idea of having my new camel clutch join me for the walk home. There would be no memories of pairing it with new boots, stuffing it full of Velana K lipgloss, or showing it off to my new friends.

But wait!!! As I was gathering up the auction bid sheets, I saw my last name as the winning bidder of a particular camel clutch. Either someone else at the auction shared my last name, or I had the best husband ever. Of course, it was the latter and I got my Crystalyn Kae! I Love the clutch and use it all the time….perfect wrist strap, great detailing, timeless style. Oh, and generous local designer who donates to charity auctions does not hurt either.

If you follow this blog, you've probably learned a little bit about my husband, Torrey, and his - let's just call it "unique" - sense of style. He is all about dressing for the occasion - we have the largest Halloween costume assortment of anyone I know. During Oktoberfest you'll see him in his "town drunk" hat, during Christmas lighting he sports a scrooge top hat, and most recently has become OBSESSED with wearing lederhosen. (we are in "Bavaria" after all...)

So on this particular Father's Day, Torrey prepared to go golfing by putting together golfing attire reminiscent of Payne Stewart meets Rodney Dangerfield. Knickers - yes. plaid - uh huh. Patriot - indeed. Crazy - fo' sure.

Those of you who know me well - know that I like to analyze EVERYTHING, so here I am analyzing my husband's obsession with unique "look at me" fashion. The attention must be a big part of it - it's as if he's performing some sort of role (like when you visit Disney World and everyone is "in character") and wants to make sure the crowd is pleased by his performance. He certainly gets a reaction out of people, which I KNOW he loves b/c he is always trying to get some sort of reaction out of me. Whatever the reason - I've come to appreciate this side of him and have taken a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" approach" on many occasions. (although you will not see me in knickers anytime soon!)

"Investment" advice from a college student...

Every summer I get the chance to come home from college at Western Washington University in Bellingham and work as a sales associate at Mapel in my hometown of Leavenworth. One of my duties at Mapel is to bring my "college-ish" style to the products we offer. So for those of you who don't mind taking style tips from a 21 year-old, here goes!

Here I am (hard at work) wearing our gorgeous Water Color Wrap Dress.

As a college student, I have been fighting the sweat-pants everyday look that most gradually adopt. I am a relatively rare commodity at Western-a student who actually LIKES fashion! My love of fashion (some might say obsession) combined with my financial status as a college student makes shopping somewhat difficult. I have found that if I buy what I like to call "Investment" pieces, I can satisfy my cravings for fashion while paying for school.

So you might be asking, what are these said "Investment" pieces? My lovely friend Alex graciously agreed to model some looks to show off three investment looks that I am loving at Mapel right now.

And last-but definitely not least-Alex shows off Mapel's Malina Silver Dress. If you're schedule looks anything like mine, you're going to need a great dress to wear to all of those summer weddings! This gorgeous number by Mahtab Azimi is timeless for women of any age.

Walk, Drink, Repeat

The 8th Annual Leavenworth Wine Walk was a huge success with the biggest turnout to date! That news wasn't at all surprising to me since I watched the crowds come into Mapel all day long. I'd like to pretend that the crowds were all in pursuit of fashion, but I have to be honest (darn) and admit that Mapel was a tasting location at this year's wine walk.

Knipprath Cellars came all the way from Spokane with 3 of the most amazing wines. The winemaker himself, Henning, brought in the cases of wine and provided tastings to the eager wine walkers. Next time you're in Spokane, I highly recommend visting Henning at Knipprath Cellars (Henning DID let me take home the open bottles of wine at the end of the night, but that's not the only reason I love Knipprath!). Rumor has it that Knipprath's wine was one of the most popular at this year's event. (it's a small town - people talk)

My darling friend Niki drove over from Seattle to help me at Mapel for the day. Of coarse the customers bought everything they saw Niki wearing since she is so adorable. Doesn't this Tulle sheer printed top look amazing on her? I thought it looked so cute that I let her take it home w/ her at the end of the night. She deserved it after slaving all day on Mapel's behalf!

Niki and I were so busy running around helping all our fabulous customers that we didn't have time to eat, so our endlessly helpful neighbors at Haus Dog Kaffeehaus brought us some homemade mango salsa later in the afternoon. (don't worry - there is a point to me telling you this random info) As I was ringing up yet another satisfied wine taster, I saw that the crowds had started "sampling" our chips and salsa! "Hey, that's my dinner!" I thought, but only smiled at them as if to say "Enjoy". One guy who was a bit more

sober than the others finally said to his wife "I think you're eating this girl's supper". She looked terribly embarrassed and turned bright red and all I could do was laugh.

At the end of the day, Henning gave me a bottle of my favorite "Au Chocolat" flavored port style wine with pure chocolate extracts and grape spirits. (doesn't look like i'm about to fall asleep gazing at it?) It is the chocolate lover's ultimate dessert wine, which is why I think it's the perfect wine for Mapel! Perhaps Staci and I should start passing out tastings of "au chocolat" in addition to our mapel truffles?!
